Masdevallias

Masdevallias are orchids endemic to South and Central America, north into Mexico. Most are cool-growing, and thus appropriate plants for Pacific Northwest collections. There is, however, a range of temperature tolerance, and one of our breeding objectives is to increase this range in our hybrids, as is evident in the following listing. We continue to offer outcrosses of selected species where possible and continue our interest in Masdevallia coccinea, color forms. Culture sheets are sent with all orders.

Masdevallia Angel Frost (veitchiana 'David Welisch' x strobelii)

Flowers are yellow to orange with white or blue hairs. The Masd. veitchina 'David Welisch', has the tallest flowers stem of all the selected and awarded clones of Masd. veitchiana. Look for taller stems on this remake.

Remake of a stunning pure color xanthic hybrid. Both parents used here are all yellow xanthics. Several quality awards were given to the original cross. We expect some high quality all yellow xanthic flowers.

Masdevallia coccinea ('Pink Sentinel' x 'Mt. Whitehorse' HCC/AOS)

We are looking for stunning pink forms of Masdevallia coccinea. The clone 'Pink Sentinel', is from a Masd. coccinea alba sib cross. Masdevallia coccinea 'Mt. Whitehorse' HCC/AOS, is a dwarf form with light pink flowers. True pink Masdevallia coccineas are rare. We hope to increase their numbers. There is the chance for alba and dwarf forms. Breeding is a roll of the dice.

Each time we have made this cross it has delighted us with award and show quality flowers. Bold cayenne and cinnamon colors with blue hairs. Flowers are held high above the foliage. Flowers are quite large due to the Masd. ayabacana parent. The clone 'Brown Tapestry', is a large flower with dark brown-red color. Expect some awards here.

Another remake, these are all blooming in deep red colors. Masd. coccinea 'Lines' is the most wonderful orange-red flower, it should have a quality award. Masdevallia Fraseri reg. 1882 (ignea 'Fourth of July' x coccinea 'Maryann')

This remake of an exceptional Masdevallia hybrid, has bright fire engine red and even some orange-red flowers. The Masdevallia ignea used here is from our outcross previously offered. The coccinea is a jungle collected plant and is an unusual red of exceptional size.

Remake of a cross we did some years ago, and registered by someone else. We expect the quality to be as good as the original grex. The flowers are the most wonderful shade of blue-violet with lots of character.
